Aim to reverse swan numbers decline

Bird Watching (UK) - - News Wire -

Swans have it easier than paramotors where flying is concerned, it seems. Sacha Dench’s attempts to follow the route of Bewick’s Swans from Siberia to Slimbridge flew into problems, making the team 10 days behind schedule. However, the first swans arrived in Germany and the Netherlands earlier this year than usual. This apparent ease, however, belies the reality of the swans’ journey; Bewick’s Swan numbers are declining and nearly a quarter of all the swans that arrive each year at Slimbridge have been wounded by shotgun fire, despite shooting swans being illegal along the flyway. Hopefully the epic flight will help to address this, along with other threats such as habitat loss and collisions with power lines.
