Ge­orge is crowned as ‘young birder of the year’

Fif­teen-year-old Ge­orge Dun­bar has beaten 30 young bird­ers to win the pres­ti­gious ti­tle of Martin Garner Spurn Young Birder of the Year. Ge­orge and four other fi­nal­ists, all un­der 16, were se­lected af­ter com­plet­ing an on­line ques­tion­naire cov­er­ing their bird­ing ex­pe­ri­ence, patch work and bird recog­ni­tion skills, as well as their com­mit­ment to bird­ing. These five fi­nal­ists then gath­ered at Spurn Bird Ob­ser­va­tory in Septem­ber at the Spurn Mi­gra­tion Fes­ti­val to bat­tle it out for the ti­tle, which has been re­named in hon­our of the late, great or­nithol­o­gist Martin Garner, who died ear­lier this year.
