Are these Starlings?

Bird Watching (UK) - - Your View -

Q I took this picture about three years ago at Sumburgh Head, Shetland, in June. At the time I think I thought they were Starlings, but looking now I can’t really work out what they are. Can you help please? Toni Piccolo

A It is often said that we should never ignore first impressions, and this is a good example of that adage. These are indeed Starlings, juveniles in fact. We think that these birds are probably members of the Shetland ‘race’ of Starling, which explains the darker colouration of the birds.
