Bird Watching (UK) - - Destination London -

One London bird is a wasteland specialist; the Black Redstart. It’s an insectivorous bird whose natural habitat is rock-falls and scree slopes. It’s not hard to imagine therefore it doing well on the rubble of bomb sites after the Blitz and persisting at railway yards, factory sites and around the London docks. Redevelopment after the war and conversion of industrial sites to residential ones has reduced habitat availability for the Black Redstart, but pairs do still inhabit central London. Green roofs are a current strategy to help provide new habitat for the species.
