RAPTORS IN FOCUS
Dick Forsman New Holland, HB, £19.99, BW Bookshop £17.99
Subtitled ‘A Quest To Find Birds Of Prey In Europe and Beyond’, this book collects more than 150 superb images of the raptors of the Western Palearctic, with the world’s foremost raptor expert, Dick Forsman, providing a commentary on the species in question. As well as vital ID hints, including a section on hybrids (which may well be more common than previously supposed), and information on migration and flyways, breeding behaviour, and hunting. There’s plenty to surprise, such as the photo of an Eastern Imperial Eagle feeding on a young Steppe Eagle, watched by a presumably worried group of similarly young Steppe Eagles! Packed with information, it’s also just a very good-looking book that you can enjoy browsing at random – I defy you not to be inspired to get out and start looking for raptors.
