Kate Risely and Claire Simm BTO, SB, £14.99
Kate Risely’s monthly column has long been one of this magazine’s most popular features, and this book, co-authored with Claire Simm, is very much in the same vein, bringing together the latest information on garden birds, drawn from the BTO’S Garden Birdwatch, while adding in extra information on mammals, insects and amphibians. It’s packed with the sort of facts that are worth knowing for their own sake (how long do different species live, for example), as well as vital conservation information, and it also gets behind the figures, explaining how the data is gathered. There are lots of excellent wildlife gardening tips, too, to ensure that you can play your part in helping declining species, and there’s also help with identifying a wide variety of birds in the first place, so this makes a great read for anyone who’s just getting started in birding by watching what’s just outside their back door.
