The RSPB is urg­ing the UK Gov­ern­ment to des­ig­nate six Ma­rine Con­ser­va­tion Zones to help con­serve the UK’S glob­ally im­por­tant, but de­clin­ing, seabird pop­u­la­tions. Ma­rine Con­ser­va­tion Zones al­ready of­fer pro­tec­tion to crea­tures that live on the seabed, and the Gov­ern­ment is con­sid­er­ing new zones to pro­tect mo­bile wildlife such as seals and dol­phins. How­ever, the RSPB wants th­ese zones ex­tended to in­clude such iconic breed­ing species as Puffins and also Kit­ti­wakes, which it says are cur­rently un­pro­tected by the pro­vi­sions of the ex­ist­ing zones.
