The BTO has partnered with DONG Energy to discover exactly how Lesser Black-backed Gulls behave around offshore wind farms, and whether the amber-listed species is at risk from the turbine blades. During the two-year study, gulls from a colony at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s South Walney Nature Reserve are being fitted with GPS tags to track their movements. At the same time, gulls from rooftops in Barrow-in-furness have also been tagged, and researchers are noticing differences in the way the two groups interact with the turbines at the Walney and Burbo Bank Extension projects.
