Black Guillemots nest close by in holes in the quay walls of the Old Harbour. Check the rocks to the right of the car park at high tide for Oystercatchers, Turnstones and Purple Sandpipers.
Wintering Red-breasted Mergansers, Great Northern and Red-throated Divers, Great Crested and Little Grebes are almost certain, joined in stormy weather by Razorbills and Guillemots. Harbour has Little, Mediterranean, Ringbilled, Iceland and Glaucous Gulls.
Soldier’s Point, which can attract wintering Snow Buntings, provides opportunities for seawatching. Manx Shearwaters and Gannets in the autumn, Razorbills and Guillemots in the winter.
Scrub and woodlands are worth exploring, especially at migration time while continuing to the coast should add Chough, Raven and Stonechat to your day’s list.
