METROPOLITAN ESSEX: Thirteen Yellow-browed Warblers were reported. Ring Ouzels were widespread. Wanstead Flats logged Wood Lark, Short-eared Owl, Hawfinch, Jack Snipe, 15 Whitefronts and a Great Grey Shrike. Leyton Flats had a Serin and Hawfinch. Short-eared Owls were at four further sites. Firecrests were at five sites. A Black Redstart was at the Olympic Park. An Osprey flew over Woodford Green. A Bittern was at Seventy Acres Lake. MID ESSEX: Abberton logged Black Redstart, Black-necked Grebe, six Little Stints, Spoonbill, three Whooper Swans, two Slavonian Grebes and 715 Great Crested Grebes. A Honey Buzzard was over Brightlingsea. A Rough-legged Buzzard was at Alresford. Wivenhoe had Jack Snipe, Hobby, Turtle Dove, three Whitefronts, a Yellow-browed Warbler, Dartford Warbler, three tundra Bean Geese and a Dusky Warbler. A Glossy Ibis and Hen Harrier were at Fingringhoe Wick and Langenhoe. Five Whitefronts and a Black Brant were at Old Hall Marshes. West Mersea had a Black Brant, four Whitefronts, eight Eiders and a Cattle Egret. A tundra Bean Goose was at Heybridge GP. An Isabelline Shrike was at The Hythe. N ESSEX: A Shag, 60 Great Crested Grebes, a Red-necked Grebe, two Black-necked Grebes, a Scaup and Great Skua were off Wrabness. A Hen Harrier was at Beaumont. Another was at Wix, with a Rough-legged Buzzard and Short-eared Owl. Cattawade Marshes had 19 Whitefronts. A Great White Egret was near Great Holland. Wigboro Wick held seven Ring Ouzels, 22 White Wagtails, a Yellow-browed Warbler, 21 Tree Sparrows and a Waxwing. Two Great Grey Shrikes and a Black Redstart were at Colne Point. The Naze had two Yellow-browed Warblers, a Great Grey Shrike, Hoopoe and a Black Brant. Holland Haven logged three Pomarine Skuas, a Sooty Shearwater, 2,652 Brent Geese, five Velvet Scoters, a Red-throated Diver, Great Northern Diver, Leach’s Petrel, Little Gull, Sabine’s Gull, Yellow-browed Warbler, two Purple Sandpipers, 27 Whitefronts, a tundra Bean Goose, four Short-eared Owls and a Med Gull. Frinton had 2,304 Brent Geese, Great Northern Diver, two Great Skuas, six Med Gulls, two Yellow-browed Warblers, Great Grey Shrike, three Firecrests, 104 Robins, Redstart, seven Wheatears, 205 Blackbirds, 129 Song Thrushes, 22 Blackcaps, 145 Goldcrests, a Yellow Wagtail, 44 Wrens, 18 Pinkfeet, Whitefront, three Short-eared Owls, five Ring Ouzels, 133 Fieldfares, three Tree Sparrows, Waxwing, Dartford Warbler, Hawfinch, Pallas’s Warbler, Snow Bunting, Richard’s Pipit and 471 Goldfinches.
RAINHAM MARSHES: Highlights included a Spoonbill, three Great White Egrets, two Cattle Egrets, 17 Little Gulls, Sandwich Tern, Arctic Tern, Kittiwake, Arctic Skua, 10 Caspian Gulls, 30 Yellow-legged Gulls, 25 Whitefronts, two Brent Geese, Whooper Swan, Spotted Redshank, Turnstone, Bar-tailed Godwit, several Jack Snipe, Short-eared Owl, Little Owl, two
Goshawks, 29 Buzzards, Hen Harrier, Marsh Harriers, Red Kite, Peregrine and two Merlins. There were several Ring Ouzels, the odd Brambling and Lesser Redpoll, Mealy Redpoll, six Tree Sparrows, Bearded Tits, Whinchats, Wheatears, Tree Pipit, Whitethroat, two Yellowhammers, Dusky Warbler, Snow Bunting, Wood Lark and Ravens.
SE ESSEX: A Glossy Ibis was at Wat Tyler CP. Two Short-eared Owls and a Purple Sandpiper were at West Canvey. There were 1,574 Avocets at Mucking Bay. TTNP had a Yellow-browed Warbler, Red Kite, two Cattle Egrets and two Lapland Buntings. East Tilbury logged Arctic Tern, Black Tern, Grey Phalarope and Ravens. A Manx Shearwater was off Canvey. Yellow-browed Warblers were at Shoebury, Gunners Park and Great Wakering. Three tundra Bean Geese, Hen Harriers, Short-eared Owls, Merlin and Lapland Bunting were at Wallasea. Twelve Whitefronts flew over South Woodham Ferrers. A Great White Egret was in Potton Creek. A Shore Lark was at Wakering Stairs, with two at Deal. Bradwell BO logged two Hen Harriers, 12 Med Gulls, four Firecrests, Pallas’s Warbler and Yellow-browed Warbler. A Red Kite flew over Bournes Green, with a Goshawk over Hutton. Howard Vaughan
