HIGH­LIGHTS: Pink-footed Geese put in their sea­sonal ap­pear­ance, with 6,000 at West­field (17th), while Hule Moss had 13,600 (2nd), plus five Great Crested Grebes. By the 21st, Pink­foot num­bers there were a stag­ger­ing 15,900, the best tally in 20 years, while also present were a male Smew, and a Hen Har­rier at nearby Green­law. There were 3,150 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Hule Moss (25th), with 13,000 Pink­feet still present. Pax­ton House (9th) had nine Cor­morants, six Goosanders, three King­fish­ers and 25 late Swal­lows. A sin­gle White-fronted Goose ap­peared (16th), when there were four Goosanders, and a Wood Sand­piper (26th). A Barn Owl was at Edrom. Yetholm Loch (18th) had 98 Mute Swans, 150 Mal­lards, two Gold­en­eye, and 24 Coots, while the count on the 23rd was 88 Mute Swans, 95 Mal­lards, 22 Coots, 10 Cor­morants, and a male Scaup. Sea­watch­ing at Rot­ten Brae, Eye­mouth, at the end of the month, saw 31 Gan­nets pass­ing and 27 Shags fish­ing, with a pair of Red-throated Divers. James D Lough
