Bird Watching (UK) - - January Id Challenge -

LAST MONTH, YOU may recall, our ID tips for woodland birds included the statement that “woodpeckers are easy”. And, of course, we stand by this in a British context, as there are very few British woodpecker species and they are very different from each other. Travel to the continent, however, and the diversity increases greatly, and with this, the relative difficulty involved in identifying them. So, here are a selection of six ’peckers, all taken in Europe (including the UK). All you have to do is identify them. If you want a bit more kudos, try to determine what gender and/or age the birds are and if you are trying to be really fancy, you could have a stab at guessing the region the bird was photographed in, for one or two. Turn for our solutions, and, as usual, turn again for more ID tips, centred around woodpeckers. WHAT AM I?
