LIFE SIZE BIRDS Rob Read & Paul Sterry Orion, HB, £20, BW Bookshop £17.99 As you’ll have read on page 36, size can be a very underrated factor in bird identification, so it’s great to finally have a book that takes it as its guiding principle. Covering all of Britain and North West Europe’s birds, there’s at least one life-size photo for each species. Now obviously, with the likes of, say, Crane, that doesn’t mean the whole bird. It’s a large format book, but not that large! But it does do a great job, even with species such as those, in conveying some sense of scale, particularly in comparison with other species. With those that you actually can fit onto a page, it’s even better. You realise just how small that many waders, in particular, really are – the likes of Jack Snipe and Little Stint, for example, but also some like Greenshank. The photography is excellent, with species captured in typical poses, and the text is relatively brief but includes all the information you’re likely to need, given that you’ll use the book to supplement a more traditional field guide. A valuable addition to any birdwatcher’s library. READER OFFER In our excusive offer, Bird Watching subscribers (UK residents only) can buy Life Size Birds for just £10 (free P&P, please quote your subscriber number).
