Barn Owl clutch numbers vary between two and six eggs, depending on the availability of food. They don’t wait until they have laid them all before they start to incubate, which means there can be quite an age gap between the young. This is nature’s contingency plan – in times of food shortage, the youngest can be fed to the oldest to ensure survival of the stronger birds. In years of poor weather, they often have small or unsuccessful clutches, sometimes leading to a ‘bumper’ year afterwards to make up for it.
