GREEN HAIRSTREAKS

In May, a gauge of my alertness on wildlife walks is how many Green Hairstreaks I spot. You might think that such a vivid green butterfly would be easy to spot. But this spring insect blends in marvellously with the scrubby foliage it frequents. Look for it – carefully! – on chalk downlands, woodland clearings and sandy grasslands nationwide.
