THE SUBBUTEO CONNECTION
The Latin name for the Hobby is Falco subbuteo, and the fact that the popular table football game of Subbuteo shares its name with the bird is no coincidence. Just after the Second World War the game’s inventor, Peter Adolph, launched his new idea. He was a keen birdwatcher and tried to register the name ‘Hobby’ as the trademark for his invention. However, his application for a trademark for the word was rejected due to the word hobby being used by many other leisure time products. Undeterred, he registered the scientific name of the falcon which shared its name, instead.
