The Latin name for the Hobby is Falco subbuteo, and the fact that the pop­u­lar ta­ble foot­ball game of Subbuteo shares its name with the bird is no co­in­ci­dence. Just af­ter the Sec­ond World War the game’s in­ven­tor, Peter Adolph, launched his new idea. He was a keen bird­watcher and tried to reg­is­ter the name ‘Hobby’ as the trade­mark for his in­ven­tion. How­ever, his ap­pli­ca­tion for a trade­mark for the word was re­jected due to the word hobby be­ing used by many other leisure time prod­ucts. Un­de­terred, he reg­is­tered the scientific name of the fal­con which shared its name, in­stead.
