Classical Yellowhammer

Bird Watching (UK) - - Location North Norfolk -

I read your delightful tribute to the Yellowhammer which stated that the bird’s song “inspired Beethoven’s Fifth”. However, having listened carefully to Yellowhammer song, I think Mozart was even more inspired by this ‘country canary’. Listen to the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute when she reaches her unlikely crescendo in “Der Hölle Rache”. The nine notes following the rejection of her daughter are far closer to a Yellowhammer song than the famous four note ‘riff’ of Beethoven’s Fifth. David Haydock, Douai, France
