If you have not yet seen your first Adder of the year (or if you have never seen one), take a May morning walk on heathland, moorland or downland. Although April’s territorial combats (dancing male snakes!) and most matings will be over for another year, females that have emerged somewhat tardily may still be waiting for a partner. Meanwhile, most males will be recuperating after their spring exertions. See them this month, as they will become harder to encounter over the summer.
