HIGHLIGHTS: A Green-winged Teal was at Idle Washlands (2nd). A Cattle Egret was seen at Besthorpe and Langford before finally settling at Girton until the end of the month. Another was at Holme Pierrepont (7th). A Hoopoe was seen in a private garden in Farnsfield. Hoveringham had a flyover Crane. A Spoonbill was at Langford (28th) and another at Attenborough the day after. Holme Pierrepont had a Red-rumped Swallow (27th-28th) and a Wood Warbler was present (30th).
LOUND/IDLE VALLEY: A Sandwich Tern was seen (1st), and three (8th). Great White Egrets were noted throughout. Up to four Avocets were seen, and Whimbrel were recorded several times. Three Bar-tailed Godwits stayed (29th-30th). Twelve Black Terns were seen (30th) along with a Little Tern and three Grey Plovers. Up to 10 Wheatears were noted throughout.
HOVERINGHAM: A Rock Pipit kicked things off (3rd), and a Corn Bunting was seen singing (5th). A Redstart was noted (15th), and later on in the month, two Whinchats were noted (25th-26th). Whimbrel were seen (19th & 30th). The tern passage (30th) was noted here too, including 71 Arctic Terns, 19 Black Terns and two Little Gulls.
OTHER SITES: Waxwings continued to be seen regularly in many locations. A flock was seen until mid-month in West Bridgford, and flocks were noted in Mansfield until the end of the month and beyond. A Scaup was at Kilvington. A Common Scoter was seen at Girton (1st) and again later in the month. Great White Egrets were noted at Budby and Osberton. Little Gulls were noted at Attenborough (up to three), Holme Pierrepont and Collingham, and a Med Gull was seen at Idle Washlands on several occasions. A nationwide day of tern passage occurred (30th), with many Black Terns seen in county, with 11 at Holme Pierrepont, and others at Girton, Kilvington and Mansfield. A Little Tern was at Hazleford Ferry too, and a few Arctics were noted, including 17 at Holme Pierrepont. Osprey passage was noted from several locations, including Wollaton, Attenborough and Farndon. Wader passage was reasonable, with a big push late on in the month. Highlights included up to 10 Grey Plovers at Holme Pierrepont, numerous Avocets, a good passage of Whimbrel, with birds at Attenborough, Kilvington, Holme Pierrepont, Netherfield and Bentinck Pit. Bar-tailed Godwits were noted at Holme Pierrepont, Besthorpe and Kilvington. A Wood Sandpiper was at Attenborough. Passerine migrants included numerous Redstarts, with birds arriving in breeding territories at Sherwood mid-month. Others were noted at Kings Mill Reservoir, Attenborough, Bulwell, Langford and Keyworth. A Black Redstart was in Hucknall. Ring Ouzels were noted from Bentinck Pit, Annesely Pit Top and
Langford, and seven were seen at Barton in Fabis. Whinchats were seen at Annesley, Bentinck Pit and Besthorpe. Wheatears were widespread throughout, and up to 12 were noted at Netherfield Lagoons. Tom Shields
