Bird Watching (UK) - - Uk Bird Sightings -

HIGH­LIGHTS: A Green-winged Teal was at Idle Wash­lands (2nd). A Cat­tle Egret was seen at Besthorpe and Lang­ford be­fore fi­nally set­tling at Gir­ton un­til the end of the month. An­other was at Holme Pier­re­pont (7th). A Hoopoe was seen in a pri­vate gar­den in Farns­field. Hover­ing­ham had a fly­over Crane. A Spoon­bill was at Lang­ford (28th) and an­other at At­ten­bor­ough the day af­ter. Holme Pier­re­pont had a Red-rumped Swal­low (27th-28th) and a Wood War­bler was present (30th).

LOUND/IDLE VAL­LEY: A Sand­wich Tern was seen (1st), and three (8th). Great White Egrets were noted through­out. Up to four Avo­cets were seen, and Whim­brel were recorded sev­eral times. Three Bar-tailed God­wits stayed (29th-30th). Twelve Black Terns were seen (30th) along with a Lit­tle Tern and three Grey Plovers. Up to 10 Wheatears were noted through­out.

HOVER­ING­HAM: A Rock Pipit kicked things off (3rd), and a Corn Bunting was seen singing (5th). A Red­start was noted (15th), and later on in the month, two Whin­chats were noted (25th-26th). Whim­brel were seen (19th & 30th). The tern pas­sage (30th) was noted here too, in­clud­ing 71 Arc­tic Terns, 19 Black Terns and two Lit­tle Gulls.

OTHER SITES: Waxwings con­tin­ued to be seen reg­u­larly in many lo­ca­tions. A flock was seen un­til mid-month in West Bridg­ford, and flocks were noted in Mans­field un­til the end of the month and be­yond. A Scaup was at Kilv­ing­ton. A Com­mon Scoter was seen at Gir­ton (1st) and again later in the month. Great White Egrets were noted at Budby and Os­ber­ton. Lit­tle Gulls were noted at At­ten­bor­ough (up to three), Holme Pier­re­pont and Colling­ham, and a Med Gull was seen at Idle Wash­lands on sev­eral oc­ca­sions. A na­tion­wide day of tern pas­sage oc­curred (30th), with many Black Terns seen in county, with 11 at Holme Pier­re­pont, and oth­ers at Gir­ton, Kilv­ing­ton and Mans­field. A Lit­tle Tern was at Ha­zle­ford Ferry too, and a few Arc­tics were noted, in­clud­ing 17 at Holme Pier­re­pont. Os­prey pas­sage was noted from sev­eral lo­ca­tions, in­clud­ing Wol­la­ton, At­ten­bor­ough and Farn­don. Wader pas­sage was rea­son­able, with a big push late on in the month. High­lights in­cluded up to 10 Grey Plovers at Holme Pier­re­pont, nu­mer­ous Avo­cets, a good pas­sage of Whim­brel, with birds at At­ten­bor­ough, Kilv­ing­ton, Holme Pier­re­pont, Nether­field and Bentinck Pit. Bar-tailed God­wits were noted at Holme Pier­re­pont, Besthorpe and Kilv­ing­ton. A Wood Sand­piper was at At­ten­bor­ough. Passer­ine mi­grants in­cluded nu­mer­ous Red­starts, with birds ar­riv­ing in breed­ing ter­ri­to­ries at Sher­wood mid-month. Oth­ers were noted at Kings Mill Reser­voir, At­ten­bor­ough, Bul­well, Lang­ford and Key­worth. A Black Red­start was in Huck­nall. Ring Ouzels were noted from Bentinck Pit, An­nesely Pit Top and

Lang­ford, and seven were seen at Bar­ton in Fabis. Whin­chats were seen at An­nes­ley, Bentinck Pit and Besthorpe. Wheatears were wide­spread through­out, and up to 12 were noted at Nether­field La­goons. Tom Shields
