Can you name the bird on the flagpole
QThis bird was sat on top my allotment flagpole this morning. Can you tell me what it is – I think it’s a Wren. James Couling
AYou’re absolutely right, it’s the ‘King of Birds’, the Wren. As well as its small size, the way the tail is held cocked up is utterly distinctive (and will be familiar to older readers who remember the representation of one on the old farthing coin). It’s quite unusual to see one perching quite so openly and prominently as this, though, as they’re generally rather skulking in their behaviour (although they give themselves away with their very loud voices).
