THE HEN HARRIER

This classic account of one man's lifetime study of the raptor has been reissued with an excellent introduction by Mark Avery, at a time when the species' very survival as an English breeding bird hangs in the balance. Essentially it compiles every bit of information about Hen Harriers that Watson could find, but it's an accessible read with a compelling narrative. As such, it's a precursor of the 'new nature writing' of recent years, and modern authors couldn't find a better exemplar. Reading it reminds you what we stand to lose if the persecution of this bird is allowed to continue – let it inspire you to take action.
