Please identify this Norfolk wader

-

QThis wader dropped in at the north Norfolk coast in October. Are the dark legs and muddy beak confusing the identity? Chris Hare

AIt’s a Dunlin in winter plumage, with the rather plain grey plumage being typical – the leg and bill colour are also what you’d expect, although individual Dunlin can be very variable in size, plumage, bill length and shape. There are a few things that make this one a little confusing. For a start, Dunlin tend to look quite dumpy and hunched, but this one’s posture makes it look more upright and long-necked than you’d normally expect. Secondly, we tend to get used to seeing Dunlin flocks, or at least loose groups – seen alone, they can bring other waders to mind. Finally, that mud makes the bill look thicker than normal, and a slightly odd shape, but blowing the photo up makes the ID clear.
