Test your wildfowl knowledge this month
THIS MONTH’S CHALLENGE IS ALL ABOUT DUCKS, GEESE AND SWANS, AKA WILDFOWL
In the UK we are blessed with great numbers of wildfowl, arriving over here during the autumn to winter in our relatively mild country with its ‘island climate’. Additionally, we have breeding ducks and a few geese and swans, most of which will remain with us for the winter period. So, at any time of year, it should be possible to add several wildfowl species to any day list. Luckily, summer is drawing to an end.
During the summer months, many of our ducks (or rather drakes) go into what is known as ‘eclipse’ plumage, and males and females look very similar, making things pretty confusing for identification. But that time is over, so here are some different challenges for you, with more of an autumnal theme. Identify these six wildfowl species, then turn for the answers and solutions and turn again for some extra identification tips.
