Monarch engineering jobs safe Birmingham-based aircraft service centre survives airline’s demise

ALMOST 300 jobs at Birmingham Airport have been saved after the engineering arm of collapsed airline Monarch revealed it would continue as a standalone business.

However, administrators made 389 other airline staff based in the city redundant as the firm went into administration on Monday.

They were among 1,948 staff across the country to lose their jobs after the collapse of the business, the UK’s fifth largest air carrier.

Monarch Aircraft Engineering opened its gigantic hangar at Birmingham Airport in 2013, providing jet maintenance and testing for its own planes and other companies on a contract basis.

The group said the airline arm’s administration would not affect business there or its other UK hubs due in part to a major new contract with Virgin Atlantic Airlines which will be serviced out of Birmingham.

Monarch Aircraft Engineering employs more than 730 staff at six locations in the UK and four overseas. While Monarch Airlines was a significant customer, the company said it was now focusing on servicing its other existing clients and securing new business.

The Virgin Atlantic Airlines conract will see the firm carrying out checks on its Boeing fleet until 2021 at Birmingham Airport. At the Paris Air Show in June, the company announced a joint venture with Boeing Global Services to collaborate on securing additional third-party fleet servicing agreements.

Managing director Chris Dare said: “Monarch Aircraft Engineering has always been a standalone business within the Monarch Group, holding its own cash, employees and property. Despite what has happened at Monarch Airlines, we continue to trade as normal. It’s business as usual.

“We are extremely happy to have secured Virgin as a new customer for our Birmingham facility. This yet again proves our ability to secure new business with the very best customers in an extremely competitive market. Our expanding customer base at Birmingham is testament to our efficient, reliable and high-quality base maintenance team.”

“As a new customer, we look forward to welcoming 17 of Virgin’s Boeing 787 aircraft into our Birmingham hangar over the next four years.”
