Bicycle industry once thrived in city

Birmingham Post - - NEWS -

DEAR Editor, After reading the details of the Lord Mayor’s suggestion to introduce bikes made in Germany for the City of Birmingham, I thought there would be a flurry of letters.

Birmingham was the centre of bicycle construction and development, and Hercules in Aston was the largest supplier for several years, together with BSA, Sun Cycles and Dawes. No doubt there were also others. I am sure we still have the ability to produce such a bike in this area.

There was also a tie-up with TI Raleigh, Tube Investments and Brooks saddles, also various chain wheel and crank producers. In those days, we also had Dunlop tyres. So much for the economic development of the West Midlands. Trevor Degge, by email
