Is this old soldier my great uncle?

Black Country Bugle - - YOUR LETTERS -

CAN your readers identify the rank and regiment of this soldier please?

There is no name on the photo but he could be Lance Corporal George Pritchard, 5861, of the Second Battalion, South Staffs Regiment.

He was my late grandmother’s brother. He was born in Bloxwich in 1881. My grandmother was Edith Lockett, née Pritchard, and she lived at Holly Bush, Cheslyn Hay, where the garden centre now is nearby, and later in a bungalow in Windsor Road, Great Wyrley.

George served in South Africa, being awarded the Orange Free State and Cape Colony medals with bars, which I have, I also have a map of the South African republic on cloth, with music for the ‘Absent Minded Beggar’ and a picture of Lord Roberts.

He subsequently died in WWI, on 16 May,1915, and is buried at Le Tourat cemetery in France. Derek Coates derekcoates600@outlook.com
