SS Great Britain safe makers

Black Country Bugle - - YOUR LETTERS -

THE letter about the West Bromwich safe found on SS Great Britain in Bugle 1365, I think you will find the names is S. Withers.

The S was for Samuel. There were two safe making firms in West Bromwich, different branches of the same family. In my younger days one was in Stoney Lane near where Albion played in former days. The other was in Barton Street, off Moor Street. I believe both companies lasted into the ’50/60s. RE edition 1365 article about Brunel’s ship SS Great Britain. The safe was made by S. Withers, not Smithers.

My dad Jim Whitehouse worked there as a safe maker before joining the Royal Navy at the outbreak of the Second World War. Jane Daniels Coseley
