BLAIR BEAT ODDS
Premier league Downfield under fire
Blairgowrie won against the odds in the GA Engineering Cup with a deserved victory over premier league side Downfield at the weekend.
Blair started brightly and looked the livelier side from the outset in what was a much more focussed performance from the team.
Rudi Brown tormented the Dundee side’s defence down the right and delivered a number of dangerous crosses.
A Simpson header was cleared off the line as Blair pressed, before a golden opportunity to take the lead came when Norrie was barged off the ball in the box after a mazy run.
Adam’s spot-kick, however, was touched onto the post by the Downfield keeper and somehow the ball was cleared as the re-bound ran along the goalline.
At the other end, O’Brien comfortably saved a low shot, then Adam saw a closerange header blocked for Blair.
Blair continued to press after the break but clear chances were hard to come by. Finally, after 58 minutes, the goal arrived – a blistering drive by Adam smacked off the crossbar, but Plenderleith reacted first to turn and hook the re-bound into the roof of the net from ten yards.
Plenderleith added a second goal for Blair in the 75th minute.
A through ball by Norrie caused havoc in the Downfield box and the Blair midfielder had the vision to deliver a delightful lob into the visitors’ net.
Downfield pressed and O’Brien was called into some serious action with a number of good saves before he was beaten from the penalty spot with seven minutes left. Inevitably the Blair defence was put under pressure, with O’Brien making a crucial block as Blair held on.
Adam had the ball in the net in stoppage time, but the “goal” was ruled out for a narrow offside. Nonetheless, Blairgowrie saw the tie out without further alarms for a well-merited victory.
