Chance to reward sporting heroes
Nominations are being sought for the 27th annual Perth and Kinross Sports Awards.
Clubs, individuals, teams and events will all be celebrated on what is set to be a night to remember in March.
Organisers at Perth and Kinross Sports Council and Live Active Leisure are looking for nominations across 11 categories including the prestigious Perth and Kinross Sports Person of the Year, sponsored by the Blairie’s sister title, the Perthshire Advertiser.
Previous winners of the main award include Perth Olympic silver medallist Stephen Milne and Kinross-shire European Indoor Championships gold medallist Laura Muir, who received the accolade last year.
The event will be held at Dewars Centre in Perth on Friday, March 16, with sports broadcaster Jim Spence hosting the evening.
One of 2017’s stand-out achievements saw long-distance cyclist Mark Beaumont, who grew up in east Perthshire, break the record for cycling around the world, a feat which saw him complete an 18,000-mile journey in less than 79 days.
From local school teams to Olympians, individual coaches to volunteers, the Perth and Kinross Sports Awards recognise the huge wealth of sporting talent that the region has to offer.
And local residents can now put forward their suggestions, with the closing date set for January 26.
Perthshire Advertiser and former Blairie Editor Johnathon Menzies said: “Everyone at the PA is proud to sponsor such a wide-ranging showcase of sporting talent.
“Athletes from the length and breadth of the region have flown the flag for Perth and Kinross at a multitude of high-profile events across the world within the last 12 months and it is right that their achievements are recognised.
“But one of the things which makes ceremonies such as the Perth and Kinross Sports Awards so special is that they are designed to give those who wouldn’t necessarily seek the limelight off their own back some well-deserved praise too.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of the local sporting scene and I’d encourage as many people as possible to send in their nominations.”
Nominees must have lived in Perth and Kinross for at least the six months prior to the event or be affiliated to a club or sport in the region.
The sport must also be officially recognised by sportscotland.
Entries will be judged on their merits in 2017.
Categories are: school team (sponsored by Active Schools); club (Steve Brown Electrical); coach (Sprinterz); George Mortimer Lifetime Achievement Award (Perth and Kinross Sports Council); volunteer (Perth Trophy Shop); junior sports personalities (Alison Wilson); disability sports person (Small City, Big Personality); young coach (The Lovat Hotel); official (Thorntons Solicitors); and team (Springfield Properties).
