PAYANO ON POINTS

WEDNESDAY August 23, 2017

FORMER world bantamweight champion Juan Carlos Payano scores an impressive decision victory over Alexis Santiago at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas the previous night (Tuesday August 22) on a show presented by Mayweather Promotions.

Payano sets the pace early, closing the distance with Santiago and delivering consistent flurries of punches. Santiago is unable to keep Payano from charging forward early, and seems focused on landing a big counter.

“The strategy was to wear him down and then really try to walk him down and take him out,” says Payano. “Santiago was a little too tough for his own good, so I kept some distance at times and controlled the fight.”

After 10 rounds of action, all three judges see the fight in Payano’s favour by scores of 100-90 and 99-91 twice.

US 2012 Olympian Jamel Herring is outpointed over 10 lightweight rounds by Ladarius Miller further down the card, with Miller’s consistent workrate earning him scores of 98-92 and 97-93 twice.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas-based Londoner Ashley Theophane loses to Shoki Sakai unanimously over eight rounds.
