Boxing News - - Opinion -

I FIND it pretty degrading that a person who had never boxed before should earn so much money for his first bout. That must be a kick in the teeth to all the professional boxers worldwide who are trying to earn a living. I’m sure there are competent pro boxers who feel they could have taken Conor Mcgregor out quicker than Floyd Mayweather did. Mcgregor was very amateurish and basic, with his hands down and chin on show at all times. In my opinion, Mayweather carried Mcgregor. Cash was the driver of the fight, and sadly not the great and rich history of the sport of boxing. Clyde Baxter, Ormskirk

DESPITE disagreeing with the Mayweather-mcgregor fight, I have to admit that I was eventually tempted to watch it, only as a result of my son paying the Box Office fee. The whole thing was merely a moneymaking exercise, and it’s ridiculous that Mcgregor has earned millions of pounds for struggling in his first pro fight. Mayweather could have opened up and finished it from the fifth onwards, but seemingly to justify the financial fiasco, he tolerated Mcgregor until the 10th. Spare a thought for the journeymen, most of whom would be on a more than equal par with Mcgregor, who fight on a regular basis for such meagre pay. Cyril Jones-evans

I AM grateful to all the wonderful people who bet on Mcgregor to beat Mayweather. Because of your efforts, bookmakers were able to offer attractive odds on a Mayweather victory. As a result, needy people like myself were able to have a risk-free investment and an easy payday! Max Winberg, Gerrards Cross

CONGRATULATIONS Mayweather for improving your record from 49-0 to 49-0. The win over Mcgregor was an exhibition show at best – not in any sense a genuine boxing match. Chris Kyle, Brighton

I ENJOYED the tribute to the late Evan Armstrong in the July 27 issue. He was a tremendous boxer, and his fight with Vernon Sollas was a classic. Kevin Dakers, Edinburgh

DON’T FORGET ‘BOMBER’ IN The Panel (August 3), the panellists were asked who they rated as the best Brit never to win a world title. Although all of the fighters mentioned are tremendous, I was surprised that Herol “Bomber” Graham’s name never came up. Jamie Skelton, Earby
