PUERTO RICO’S Jesus Rojas knocks out Claudio Marrero in the main event of a show staged by Golden Boy Promotions at the MGM Grand Marquee Ballroom.

Marrero loses the Interim WBA featherweight belt, which for some reason exists even though Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares hold WBA titles in the division.

Whatever, the fight represents a great opportunity for Rojas, from Miguel Cotto’s hometown of Caguas. He takes the action to southpaw Marrero in every round and his power eventually tell in the seventh, when a series of counters culminating in a left hook drop the Dominican Republic man for the count at 2-59.

Comments Rojas, who is now 26-1-2 (19), “We knew Marrero was going to be aggressive and we purposely worked on our counterpunching. That was what did the trick. I promised my father I would get a title one day, and even though he is no longer with us, my promise to him is complete.”
