TOP DRAW

- Peter Mann sees Wood and Humble do themselves proud

THE vacant Northern Area superbantamweight title remained just that as Chrissy Wood (Darlington) and Jamie Humble (Newcastle) stayed undefeated following a barn-storming 10-round draw at the Dolphin Centre (Relentless Promotions). It’s expected they’ll go again early in 2018, this time on Tyneside.

The pair went at each other from the off, with very little give-andcorrie take. Humble had the edge, landing slightly more clean shots and some great combinations.

Wood, meanwhile, although he found himself a little on the back foot, never relented and certainly never gave the slightly more experienced Humble room in coming forward. He frustrated Humble a number of times in the early rounds. As the contest got into the latter stages, Wood started making inroads into Humble’s defence.

At the final bell, Kenny Pringle adjudged the bout a draw at 95-95.

Darlington’s Ellis Corrie made the switch from Muay Thai to pro boxing with consummate ease, referee Graeme Williams awarding him a 40-36 victory over Leeds fighter David Zubrzycki.

smoothed his way through the early rounds before chasing down his opponent in the latter two, opening up in the last to take the win.

Richard O’neill enjoyed a good win over Welshman Geraint Goodridge, the Hartlepool fighter blowing off cobwebs with an impressive attacking performance against a fighter who gave as good as he received. The pair stood midring and traded blows on several occasions, Mr Williams awarding the contest 40-37 to O’neill.

Terry Tyres had his second pro bout and earned a narrow win against Manchester’s Mike Castell. Tyres, from Trimdon, never really found himself troubled, before Steve Hawkins marked up a 39-37 victory for the home fighter.

The remaining matchup saw Darlington’s Neil Hepper come up short against visiting Spain-based fighter Sean Pendry.

Totally out of sorts, Hepper never really got into the contest. Mr Hawkins terminated proceedings after just 130 seconds of the first round.

THE VERDICT A terrific tie in the main event.
