10 COUNT

IRONED OUT

-

Some memorable Tyson one-rounders

1. MICHAEL SPINKS (1988) Spinks was 31-0 going into his title defence against Tyson. But he was unable to look the 21-year-old in the eyes during the pre-fight instructions and was then flattened by a right hand in 91 seconds.

2. BRUCE SELDON (1996) WBA champion Seldon nervously flicked out his jab and scurried around the ring like a man expecting to be knocked out, and soon hit the deck like he had been, despite not appearing to take a punch.

3. CARL WILLIAMS (1989) Williams stood his ground, popped his jab, and had a go, but that didn’t stop Tyson flooring him with a stunning left hook at 93 seconds.

4. MARVIS FRAZIER (1986) Marvis, son of “Smokin” Joe, was trapped in a corner and brutally chopped down by Tyson in 30 seconds.

5. ALEX STEWART (1990) Tyson floored Stewart with the second right hand he threw, inside the first 10 seconds, and then finished the job with a left hook at 2-27.

6. HENRY TILLMAN (1990) Tillman came out running and offered no apology. Tyson, though, caught up with him in the final 30 seconds of the round and sent Tillman sprawling with a right to the forehead.

7. PETER MCNEELEY (1995) The first man to fight Tyson following his stint in jail, Mcneeley attacked him kamikaze-style, and was disqualified after 89 seconds because his trainer entered the ring.

8. LOU SAVARESE (2000) It took Tyson just 38 seconds to finish Savarese at Glasgow’s Hampden Park in a fight famous for referee John Coyle nearly taking a shot as he tried to save Lou.

9. CLIFFORD ETIENNE (2003) Now with a face tattoo, Tyson stopped Etienne in 49 seconds, and then told the world he’d broken his back in training camp.

10. HECTOR MERCEDES (1985) Tyson began his professional career in March 1985 with a 107-second drubbing of Mercedes at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.
