The two never did meet in the ring

“I MEAN, Sugar Ray Leonard was doing Sugar and Donald Curry was doing Donald. Sugar was a little older than I was. My eldest brother [Bruce Curry] got me into boxing. Ray beat Bruce to go to the Olympics. I saw all the affairs he had at the Olympics and after turning pro, and he was the man. I’d seen him beat my brother and I used to handle my brother a lot easier than Ray did. In my mind I was thinking, ‘I can get this guy.’ I think he knew that too. Ray had fought [Roberto] Duran, [Wilfred] Benitez, [Thomas] Hearns and been through some wars. Here was this young guy coming up and he knew how bad he was when he was coming up. Now he was a vet in the game and I don’t think he wanted to risk that. That’s how much respect that Ray Leonard [right] had for me. He wanted to jump in front of me to fight Marvin Hagler because he thought I could beat him.”
