Support from Red Cross after hospital
THE British Red Cross has launched a new service to help vulnerable people regain their confidence and become independent again after a visit to accident and emergency.
The Home from Hospital pilot scheme, in partnership with Buckinghamshire County Council, began at Wexham Park Hospital on June 30 and at Stoke Mandeville Hospital on July 1.
Its aim is to help people deemed medically fit to return home from A&E, but may not feel confident enough to do so because they do not have support nearby.
Red Cross staff based at each hospital offer practical help such as transporting the person home and accompanying them inside to check they have everything they need to remain comfortable. This could include making a drink or snack, ensuring the house is warm, safe and secure, and informing neighbours or family members that the person has returned home.
Staff are also fully trained to provide emotional support where needed and will remain with them until they feel settled. People then have the option of a further two weeks of support, such as face-toface visits or phone calls, if they still require some extra help.
