ROYAL Doulton character jugs were first produced in the early 1930s from a design and model by Charles Noke, who was the creative director of the company.
He started a trend that continues to the present day.
This particular jug, of Good King Hal – Henry VIII – came into production in 1979 and continued for more than 10 years.
These jugs are generally very affordable – starting at around £25 – and there are some great ones to collect in many different series.
These include characters from Charles Dickens, Laurel and Hardy, sports stars, famous historical characters and many others.
The character jugs come in three sizes – small, medium and large – although these days only the large range remain in production.
Not surprisingly then, the best ones to collect are the small and medium ranges, which take up less space in your display cabinets and could prove to be a great investment in years to come.
Virtually all the Royal Doulton character jugs ever produced are on display at the American Toby Jug Museum in Evanston, Illinois.
Royal Doulton character jugs like this one of King Henry VIII are very collectable
