Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - WHAT'S ON THIS WEEKEND - MARY TEBJE @visitchilterns

IT SEEMS like the whole country is keen to get cycling, so here are some great ideas for how to either get back into the saddle, or to try some new Chilterns’ routes brought to you by Cycle Chilterns.

Social rides and groups are becoming more popular across the UK, especially when it comes to ‘Ladies Only’. So get back on your bike this summer and join us on a ride to meet up with like-minded ladies, get fit, have fun and probably drink some tea.

The Cycle Chilterns ladies’ rides are led by Helen Biggerstaff who has many years of experience and will be able to give information on what bike and kit to purchase and where to find female-friendly bike shops. The next two rides are on: Sunday, August 10 from 10am to noon starting from Wendover Clock Tower – 10:00 to 12:00 from Wendover Clock Tower.

Sunday, September 7 from 10am to noon from Holmer Green Common.

Each ride is limited to eight people so booking is essential. To book, email helen. biggerstaff@ctc.org.uk or call Helen directly on 07795 030847. Two other rides you could consider are: Five Miles to Fabulous With the motto ‘Smileage not mileage’ these ladies rides are organised by CTC South Herts. Ride leader Rona Wightman usually has a basic short ride in mind, but can can add extra loops if the group are going well. They generally cover eight to ten miles. If only ‘faster’ regulars turn up they can cover fifteen miles. There’s always a coffee stop and they try and take in points of interest en route.

Ivinghoe Velos ‘The Tea Ride’ Not specifically for ladies but very popular anyway, the rides take place every Saturday at 10am from The Rose & Crown in Ivinghoe. The route and destination is not decided in advance – so feel free to arrive with a suggestion! The abilities and time constraints of all riders is taken into consideration too, so it’s a great group to join if you’re new to cycling or getting back on your bike after a bit of a break. All makes, models and ages (bikes and people!) very welcome – although under 16s should be accompanied by an adult.
