P24-27 ‘New pub would be the heart of village’
Having ‘somewhere to meet for a drink after work’ tops wishlist
A NEW pub and a community police station are among the things on a wishlist put together by villagers.
People living in Gerrards Cross believe the village would benefit from more community facilities, and that bringing new amenities into the area would give the village back its ‘heart’.
Gerrards Cross used to have two traditional pubs, the French Horn and the Packhorse, but these closed down in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
The closest traditional pubs are now in Fulmer or Chalfont St Peter.
Villagers believe that bringing back a community pub could have a positive impact on the village, and would help to attract more people to the area.
Gerrards Cross Community Association member Suzie Bower, said: “One of the things that people say is that they miss having somewhere to meet after work in the centre of the village.
“I know that people used to enjoy meeting for a drink, but we don’t have a village pub any more.
“The other thing that we have heard is that there is just nowhere to go to watch big international sports matches on a big screen.
“That’s why we started providing that service for England games during the World Cup. It would be nice if there was somewhere people could do that in the centre of the village.”
This view was also shared by Ros Hurn, of Bulstrode Way, but she believes that the village would now struggle to accommodate a new pub.
She said: “A village pub would be good to have to give people somewhere to get together.
“We are missing somewhere like that definitely.
“I often think that Gerrards Cross has no real heart to it, so it would help.
“The problem is, where would it go? It would be hard to fit one in.”
Mrs Hurn also backed Thames Valley Police’s bid to bring a police station to the centre of the village.
The organisation is on the look out for a site because it feels its building in Oxford Road is too large.
She said: “I think that would be a great community facility to have, and I think it’s a fantastic idea.”
