Aisle be blowed! Surprise shop meet-up 63 years on
Ex-RAF pair joined up at same time in 1951, then lost touch
AN 80-YEAR-OLD has been reunited with a man he joined the RAF with 63 years ago after a chance meeting in a supermarket.
David Booker, who lives in Woodhurst Drive, Denham, was shopping in Waitrose, Gerrards Cross, when he bumped into Mr Leano.
Mr Booker joined the RAF for national service on November 8, 1951, and was sent for training where he met Mr Leano.
He stayed in the RAF for two years, but never saw Mr Leano again until he went for his weekly shop last week.
Mr Booker said: “We did training and I never saw him after that, I never came across him.
“I was doing our usual shop with my wife, she was getting vegetables, and as I looked down the aisle I saw him.
“I recognised him straight away, even after all these years. I remembered him because his family had owned an estate agent in Uxbridge.”
Mr Booker said: “I went up to him and said ‘Are you Mr Leano?’
“He was shocked knew his name.
“I told him I recognised him from the RAF and in 1951 we had signed up together.
“I think he was flattered he was recognisable, which is something at 80!
“He was always slim, and had a lot of hair, and he was the same.”
Mr Leano, also 80, stayed in the RAF and became an instructor.
He wanted to be a pilot
Ibut was only able to realise his ambition when he took up flying at Denham Aerodrome, in Tilehouse Lane, which is behind the house Mr Booker has lived in for 47 years.
He added: “I couldn’t believe he’d been just behind us and we’d not seen each other.
“When I told my friends they couldn’t believe it. What are the chances?”
