DIY store wins award treble
Shop takes best business accolade
A DIY store has scooped three awards including best business in a village traders’ competition.
Businesses and Traders for Chalfont St Giles (BAT4CSG) celebrated employment opportunities and choice in the area with a contest.
People voted in five categories and the winners were announced at the village’s annual show on Saturday.
Yalden DIY and Garden store triumphed, with awards for best local business, best employer and best customer service, while St Giles Surgery was voted best community service and Little Retreat beauty spa won best start-up.
Family business Yalden, in Three Households, was started 61 years ago.
Fourth generation manager Matthew Yalden, who says he is most happy with the best customer service award, added: “I thought I had a chance but I did not think I would get the votes to win all three of them. I’m genuinely surprised.”
Yalden’s workers include several young people who did odd jobs for the shop in their teens and have now returned to work there while during breaks from university.
Little Retreat was set up three years ago yet is still one of the village’s newest businesses.
Owner Carly Griffin said: “We are really lucky to win it. Our clientele comes from Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross and even Ealing, but the people in St Giles are really loyal to the local businesses.”
BAT4CSG member Martin Vessey said: “The best local business was close between The Deli and Yalden, but Yalden ran away with it on best employer, while the best customer service was much closer between all three nominees.
“Little Retreat was very successful in gaining the most votes in any category and St Giles Surgery extended their lead during the past two weeks to secure an excellent win.”
As well as the accolade, winners received a plaque and free use of a Holiday Inn meeting room.
