The most Costa cafes in the UK
Tracey Westrip from The Hidden Tea Shop in Little Chalfont SOUTH Bucks has three times the number of Costa coffee shops per head than the national average.
There are 0.6 branches for every 10,000 residents in the area, far higher than the national average of 0.2 and the highest ratio in the UK.
For the whole of Bucks, there are four Caffe Nero, two Coffee Republic, 18 Costa and five Starbucks branches, which means there are 0.35 Costas per 10,000 county.
Nationally Costa has about half (1,429 stores) of the nation’s coffee chain outlets – 23 for every million people.
Starbucks (638) was the second most dominant with 22.7 per cent of the market, while Caffe Nero (494) came third, with 17.6 per cent.
Costa’s domination of the market makes life tough for others, however.
The Hidden Tea Shop in Little Chalfont competes for customers with Costa in Chenies Avenue.
Manager Tracey Westrip said: “It is scary that there are so many Costas at the moment.
“We do get some people coming in and saying that they don’t like their coffee and it is expensive too.
“I think that smaller shops offer a nicer atmosphere too.”
