Ste­wart scrapes the win in tight 10k race

IT WAS a Chiltern Har­ri­ers 1-2 in the men’s race at the Shard­e­loes 10k at Amer­sham Cricket Club’s ground on Sun­day.

Barely a hair’s breadth sep­a­rated team-mates Al­lan Ste­wart and Si­mon Beedell ei­ther, with both be­ing clocked at 37.29 mins, but Ste­wart get­ting the nod for first place.

With fel­low Chiltern run­ners Nick Hughes and Thomas Dixon fol­low­ing them home in fifth and sixth, it will come as no sur­prise to learn that Har­ri­ers also took the men’s team prize, while Hughes’ time of 39.05 also landed him gold in the vet­er­ans 40-49 cat­e­gory.

Third place over­all went to Vale of Ayles­bury’s Ben Davies, in 37.43, while team-mate Paul Gre­gory took the vet­er­ans 50-59 prize in 38.05.

In the old­est age group, Bear­brook RC’s Ton Bar­rows as the first veteran 60 home in 47.57, while at the other end of the age scale, Ja­cob Hine, of St Al­bans Strid­ers, was the ju­nior win­ner in 43.17.

In the women’s race, Chiltern had to set­tle for sec­ond in both the in­di­vid­ual and team plac­ings, with Da­co­rum & Tring tak­ing the team prize and Chich­ester AC’s Fay Cripps win­ning the race in 42.16.

Ali Young en­sured sil­ver for Chiltern in 44.11, and with her and Cripps both run­ning in the veteran 35 cat­e­gory, those were the plac­ings there too.

Tring’s Sophie Green was third in 44.43, while Wat­ford Har­ri­ers’ Caro­line Whit­taker was the first 45-54 veteran home in 48.27 and Fiona Cun­ning­ton, of New­mar­ket Cy­cling & Tri Club, took veteran 55 hon­ours in 49.24.

Mean­while, the fun team com­pe­ti­tion win­ners were Ian’s Grib­blers, con­sist­ing of Michael Sci­acca, Rus­sell Mueller, Graeme Wil­liams and Jonathan Josey.
