Stewart scrapes the win in tight 10k race
IT WAS a Chiltern Harriers 1-2 in the men’s race at the Shardeloes 10k at Amersham Cricket Club’s ground on Sunday.
Barely a hair’s breadth separated team-mates Allan Stewart and Simon Beedell either, with both being clocked at 37.29 mins, but Stewart getting the nod for first place.
With fellow Chiltern runners Nick Hughes and Thomas Dixon following them home in fifth and sixth, it will come as no surprise to learn that Harriers also took the men’s team prize, while Hughes’ time of 39.05 also landed him gold in the veterans 40-49 category.
Third place overall went to Vale of Aylesbury’s Ben Davies, in 37.43, while team-mate Paul Gregory took the veterans 50-59 prize in 38.05.
In the oldest age group, Bearbrook RC’s Ton Barrows as the first veteran 60 home in 47.57, while at the other end of the age scale, Jacob Hine, of St Albans Striders, was the junior winner in 43.17.
In the women’s race, Chiltern had to settle for second in both the individual and team placings, with Dacorum & Tring taking the team prize and Chichester AC’s Fay Cripps winning the race in 42.16.
Ali Young ensured silver for Chiltern in 44.11, and with her and Cripps both running in the veteran 35 category, those were the placings there too.
Tring’s Sophie Green was third in 44.43, while Watford Harriers’ Caroline Whittaker was the first 45-54 veteran home in 48.27 and Fiona Cunnington, of Newmarket Cycling & Tri Club, took veteran 55 honours in 49.24.
Meanwhile, the fun team competition winners were Ian’s Gribblers, consisting of Michael Sciacca, Russell Mueller, Graeme Williams and Jonathan Josey.
