Guide leader’s rally call for successor or face closure
Chalfont St Peter 1st Guides needs replacement to survive
A GUIDE leader is calling for volunteers to help save a group which is nearly 100 years old.
Philomena Larman, 61, is planning on retiring as guide leader for Chalfont St Peter 1st Guides and the unit will close without a replacement.
The village once had five units but will be left with just one – Chalfont St Peter 5th guides – if the 1st unit closes.
Mrs Larman of Copthall Lane said: “It will be a terrible shame if it closes – I think the village would lose an awful lot. No one is coming forward and I’m coming up to that time in my life when retirement is the natural progress.
“I have not got the energy for the girls and it’s not fair on them.”
Mrs Larman, who was a girl guide herself, has led the unit for a decade.
The unit was started in 1917 and has 24 girls although that number is expected to grow, with a waiting list for brownies aged seven to 10 to join.
However, the girls would have to be declined if a leader does not come forward.
Mrs Larman said she will train a new person and ‘stay in the background’ when help is needed.
The group meets every Thursday for about an hour and a half at the Guide Hut in Lansdown Road and also takes trips.
“You are more or less allowed to write your own programme,” added Mrs Larman.
“I’m an outdoor person so my girls do a lot of outdoor stuff. The girls who joined my unit quickly saw that was what I’m about.
“I just enjoy being with the children and watching them grow from 10 year olds to self-sufficient 14-year-olds.
“It is a lot of fun. You get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing them achieving.
“You get young girls from unit going all different backgrounds and abilities. A child is accepted regardless.”
Call Mrs Larman on 07708 871 250 to volunteer as a guide with the group.
