Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - GREEN SPACES -

ENVIRONMENTAL charity Groundwork South are looking for more volunteers to help out with conservation events.

The activities, which take place on the second Sunday of the month, last about three hours.

Groundwork green spaces assistant Katherine Davies explained: “We go to Hardings Row Nature Reserve (in Iver Heath) on the Sunday morning, and Denham Quarry (in Harefield) on the Sunday afternoon. At all the events, tools and work gloves are provided, and we just ask people to wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a bit mucky, and sturdy boots or wellies.

“We also ask people to dress for the weather (be it bringing waterproofs or sunhat/suncream) and to bring their own refreshments.

“The tasks we carry out include clearing overgrown vegetation, coppicing small trees, clearing access paths, boardwalks and bridges, stacking dead wood to create habitat piles, litter-picking and clearing any rubbish, removing invasive species if necessary and generally working to improve the landscape for both people and wildlife.”

The charity, which is responsible for overseeing the care and protection of the whole of the Colne Valley Park, says that conservation events also help to get people outdoors enjoying a bit of light exercise and learning new skills which could be a great CV boost for anyone looking to pursue a career in the environmental sector.

Ms Davies added: “The events are very informal and relaxed – nobody is expected to work too hard or for the whole time. We stop for a tea-break if people would like too, so it can be very sociable. I’m always on hand to teach people how to use certain tools, and explain to people why we’re doing the work that we’re doing and what environmental benefits it will have for the reserve.”

The next events take place this Sunday at Harding’s Row Nature Reserve from 9.30am-12.30 pm.

If you’d like to help, meet at the reserve entrance at the end of Hardings Row (Off Swallow Street), Iver Heath, SL0 0HF

The afternoon session will take place from 1-4pm at Denham Quarry. Meet at the reserve entrance on Moorhall Road, South Harefield, UB9 6PE.
