RENNIE Grove Hospice Care is looking for more people to join their team and help in their charity shops.

Volunteer Alison Bickerton, who recently celebrated 20 years of volunteering with Rennie Grove Hospice Care, currently helps in one of the charity’s 20 shops. She decided to help with the charity when her children were both at secondary school and wanted to do something to fill her spare time.

She explains: “I like volunteering at the shop as I am a real people person and love talking to customers. I have really got to know some of the regulars over the years and it is always nice to see them. Other people prefer to help in the back of the shop pricing items and sorting through the stock. It is great that you can choose a role you feel comfortable with.

“I also find the work really interesting as the charity keeps us informed about what they do and I love finding out new things. At one staff meeting a Hospice at Home nurse came to talk to us to give a better understanding of the work they do.

“The annual volunteers’ party is also really good fun and it is nice that the work of the volunteers is recognised. It makes us feel that what we do is appreciated and helps us to see how our work contributes to the charity overall.

“I would say to anyone with a few hours to spare that it is definitely worth volunteering, go for it and you will make lots of friends, learn new things and even have fun.”

The Rennie Grove Retail Team is tasked with raising £2.2million this year to ensure that the charity can carry on caring for 3,000 local patients and families.

Thanks to the support of the local community which donates about 650 bags of items every day and the dedication of a large team of volunteers, the shops have the second highest profit margin for UK hospices charity shop chains at 45.5 per cent.

Deborah Gould, area manager, said: “Our wonderful volunteers like Alison help make our shops the success that they are. We are really keen to hear from anyone who would like to join our team and help in one of the shops. You don’t have to give a minimum amount of time or even commit to specific days as it would be helpful for us to have people we could call on to help during holiday times or at busy times such as Christmas.”

If you are interested in volunteering with Rennie Grove Hospice Care please contact the Rennie Grove Volunteer Services Team on 01442 890 222 or email volunteer@renniegrove. org or visit www.renniegrove. org/volunteer.
