Elderly make Contact

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - NEWS -

ELDERLY people who may be facing a Christmas alone this year are being urged to join a social group.

The Chalfont St Giles branch of Contact the Elderly which caters for people over 75 has extended its gatherings from once a month to every fortnight due to an increase in members.

Group leader Waseem Sadique says over the past year it has helped many people out of isolation, including one woman who only had 30 minutes of human contact over a 10-day period.

Mr Sadique said: “Loneliness certainly is becoming more of a problem. If it is a problem, talk to neighbours because most people would not allow it to happen. Just let it be known to others that this is the scenario.”

The group currently has about 10 volunteers and is calling for more drivers to help pick up its members.

Mr Sadique added: “Sometimes you get asked if there is religion or money involved. There is neither which puts their minds at rest.”
