Villagers vent fury over traffic warden tickets
Council say they fined only one car
VILLAGERS have been expressing their anger after three traffic wardens were sent to cover a community event which caused the temporary closure of a car park.
Chalfont St Peter Christmas Fun Night attracted thousands of people and was hailed as a success on Friday last week, but an unusually high number of wardens were not received as warmly.
On the Chalfont St Peter Forum, a website that gives villagers a chance to air their views about all manner of topics, people have criticised Bucks County Council’s decision to send three wardens.
One forum user, who uses the online name Jaunty1, said: “On my way home, along the Lower Road, I was astounded to see three traffic wardens ticketing cars parked at the side of the road! The most irritating part of it is that it was pre-orchestrated, they have actually targeted a village event. I’ve nothing but sympathy for anyone that has been slapped with a ticket for attending an event that benefits the village.”
Another villager who uses the name Big Baggles added: “Three traffic wardens – that must be our quota for the whole year on an evening when we try and promote the village.”
St Peter Precinct’s car park was closed during the event, which closed The Vale to traffic from 4.30pm to 9pm, although Church Lane car park was open all evening.
One of the event’s organisers, Mike Day, said: “My view is if people park illegally and they get done – hard luck.
“We ask people to walk to the event and the majority do but we certainly did not arrange for wardens to be there.”
Bucks County Council spokesman Dan Elworthy said the authority issued one ticket at about 8pm for a car parked on double yellow lines on the night.
He said usually there would be two teams of two wardens enforcing throughout the county on a late evening but due to sickness and one warden not being available, three wardens worked from one vehicle at the event.
