Ap­pren­tice­ships con­trib­ute £4bn

AP­PREN­TICE­SHIPS have con­trib­uted £4bil­lion to the south-east’s econ­omy this year.

Re­searchers from the Cen­tre for Eco­nomics have an­nounced the fig­ure, which in­cludes gains to the econ­omy from higher wages, business prof­its and taxes, an es­ti­mated re­duc­tion in un­em­ploy­ment ben­e­fit pay­ments and ben­e­fits to or­gan­i­sa­tions while train­ing ap­pren­tices.

There were 116,960 par­tic­i­pat­ing ap­pren­tices in the south-east in 2012/13, 12 per cent of the UK to­tal.
