Sig­na­ture is the mu­sic – and Bly­ton’s chair

ASTRONG con­nec­tion to Enid Bly­ton, its her­itage and plenty of lo­cal mu­sic puts The Red Lion at the heart of the com­mu­nity, says its land­lady.

Tina Massie, who grew up in York­shire, took charge of The Red Lion, in Penn Road, Knotty Green, nearly nine years ago.

She had been work­ing as a bar­maid at the pub when it came up for sale.

“We used to come to The Red Lion to play cards be­cause, in those days, it was al­ways quiet on a Sun­day evening,” she said.

“The ser­vice was not so good, so I used to gen­tly rib the land­lord. He said words to the ef­fect of ‘If you think you could do any bet­ter?’ and so I ended up do­ing a few shifts be­hind the bar.

“When the pub came up for sale, I thought it sounded like a fun idea, so I per­suaded my hus­band to help me buy it. I thought ‘I used to be a bar­maid’ so it should be easy’. If only!”
