ASTRONG connection to Enid Blyton, its heritage and plenty of local music puts The Red Lion at the heart of the community, says its landlady.
Tina Massie, who grew up in Yorkshire, took charge of The Red Lion, in Penn Road, Knotty Green, nearly nine years ago.
She had been working as a barmaid at the pub when it came up for sale.
“We used to come to The Red Lion to play cards because, in those days, it was always quiet on a Sunday evening,” she said.
“The service was not so good, so I used to gently rib the landlord. He said words to the effect of ‘If you think you could do any better?’ and so I ended up doing a few shifts behind the bar.
“When the pub came up for sale, I thought it sounded like a fun idea, so I persuaded my husband to help me buy it. I thought ‘I used to be a barmaid’ so it should be easy’. If only!”
